I'd like to recommend a well-written AP news article to you that I just read which gives excellent background and contextual information about the gun controversy in the US. Interestingly, the most commonsense measures to control gun violence in America (universal background checks even for gun shows and for private sales, not selling guns to the mentally ill, keeping guns out of the hands of people on terror watch lists) are not really controversial because the majority of Americans support them. What makes them controversial is the stubbornness of law makers in Washington and in State houses. They depend on the National Rifle Association for their fund raising and for endorsements, so they (esp. republicans) are reluctant to introduce even the most obvious gun control laws.
